Description
The Midge Shuttle Olive Tan isn’t a dry fly that floats on top of the water: it’s an emerger, and it works inside the film. The tuft of CDC tied in at the head works like the badminton shuttlecock the style takes its name from — the shuttlecock pattern, attributed to the English angler Clive Perkins — and it keeps the fly suspended with the head in the surface and the abdomen hanging below: exactly the position of the chironomid that’s emerging from its shuck and stays trapped for a few seconds in the film. That’s the moment the trout takes it, and it’s why an emerger often outfishes the perfectly tied adult. The body in light olive 10/0 tying thread reproduces the most common shade of the pupae, while the tan CDC stays visible at water level even in the smallest sizes. The CDC fibres trap micro air bubbles and support the fly without adding weight, and they pulse at the slightest current giving that movement the fish reads as life. Fish it dead drift over rising fish, tippet 0.10-0.12 mm. If a fish drags it under, dry it off and dress it again with floatant powder: the CDC comes back like new. Each fly is hand-tied by Massimo Clini. Tied on a barbless hook: unhooking is quick and the fish is released unharmed. Pack of 3 flies. Available in sizes #16, #18 and #20.
