Description
The Midge Shuttle Black & White is the maximum-contrast version of the shuttlecock style: the CDC tuft on the head holds the fly suspended in the film, with the abdomen below the waterline, in the position of a chironomid pupa stalled mid-hatch — the stage when the insect is most defenceless and trout stop being selective. Black is among the most common colours in chironomid pupae and gives the sharpest silhouette a fish can see backlit, looking up from below towards the surface. The white CDC solves the practical problem of these sizes: a dark #20 at twenty metres, in shadow or at dusk, is invisible — the pale tuft gives you the reference you need to know where the fly is and when to set the hook. The CDC floats by trapping air between the fibres and gives the fly shape without weighing it down, so it lands delicately even on mirror-calm water. Dead drift, no imparted movement, tippet 0.10-0.12 mm. If the CDC becomes waterlogged, dry it and re-treat it with floatant powder. Each fly is hand-tied by Massimo Clini. Tied on a barbless hook: unhooking is quick and fish are released unharmed. Pack of 3 flies. Available in sizes #16, #18 and #20.
